Lake Tyrell

BioMars Project with ModLab at Lake Tyrell. Lake Tyrell is a big lake in Victoria, Australia. It is about 6 hours NW of Melbourne. The biologists/geologists on the team told me the lake gets its water from the rain as well as water that seeps up from the ground. Over thousands of years salt is carried in by the rain from the ocean. Since there is no river that drains the salt back to the ocean it has no place to go, and in many places of the lake a big salt crust appears sometimes an inch thick. So you see all these formations of beautiful salt crystals. I brought some home ( see last couple of pictures). The scientists however seemed to be more interested in the mud. You have to be careful in the places where water seeps up from the ground. Some places are rigid while some you just sink right in. It's like quicksand. There's a picture of Marco somewhere in the mud till over his knees. These pictures were taken mainly by Marco Blothe and Mark Yim.
